The director designed the praxis to be rooted in the ancient soil of biblical restoration and in the ancient practice of spiritual direction. It develops an argument for the need for greater theological reflection on the vocation of preaching for modern preachers.  It does so by outlining current challenges in homiletical education and ecclesial calls for greater vocational formation for preachers.  It suggests that the writings of Humbert of Romans, in his work The Treatise on Preaching, can help modern preachers gain deeper vocational awareness. Chapter two introduces the general cultural context of the thirteenth century.  It discusses the emergence of the two great mendicant orders the Dominicans and the Franciscans.  It sets into context the life and ministry of Humbert of Romans, the fifth Master General of the Dominican Order and offers a theological analysis of Section One of The Treatise on Preaching. Chapter three introduces a 'dialogue partner' to set alongside the Humbert material. The goal of the dialogue partner was to appropriately apply the material in a practical and contemporary setting.  The chapter does this by way of curriculum development and pastoral practice.  Theories of adult learning are explored and a retreat curriculum is developed that enables the Humbert material to be considered by preachers in a spiritual and educational setting.Chapter four explains a methodology for determining the effectiveness of the retreat for vocational awareness and examines the feedback from participants. Feedback included written questionnaires, video assessment and field observation.  This feedback is used to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of the retreat in achieving the goals and outcomes outlined in chapter three. Chapter five offers a review of the entirety of the project based on Scripture verses about preaching which framed the content of each chapter. Yet, despite its central location in the Bible's life and praxis, it remains in many churches today undervalued or ignored in the discipleship process. This thesis explores the implications of biblical hospitality and centers theme within a local church's discipleship process. The goal is to change participants' perspectives on their own role as hospitable disciples participating in the Great Commission. The method of research included comparing pre- and post-survey data. The thesis of this investigation is that pastoral care can be supportive and productive for families, especially during the experience of homelessness. The setting was an emergency shelter that was established for short-term service to women with children from infancy through adolescence. Using ethnographic methods with extensive narrative from the participants, mothers often offered glimpses of resilience in their lives as they shared with a pastoral care provider. These relationships incorporate mentors who are both military professionals and mentors who are religious leaders of integrity. Using a mixed methods approach to descriptive research, the author researched biblical and historical methods of discipleship, ministerial formation, modern research in mentoring, and surveyed chaplains about personal experiences with mentors during their early military careers. This grief was experienced after leaving home in their host country from the loss produced by the unavailability of attachments that anchored their lives. The primary focus of the study was to determine whether or not there were correlations between attachment to God, resilience, and grief. I first explore the biblical and systematic theology of Christlike maturity. Next, I describe a series of interviews in which the three most common emerging themes affecting spiritual growth among graduate students were: limited time, the need for community, and spiritual growth through crises.
