The author coached five pastors to discover an existing need within the communities they serve.  She showed how a particular skill set can turn around a local church in a weakened state of decline. Research from the author centered on interviews of five young clergy within the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church. The Control group will be involved in a ten week sermon series covering the ten traits found in the book. The Experimental group will attend the same sermon series, but additionally attend small group studies on the same ten traits, as well as be required to read the Book Becoming a Healthy Disciple. Using style approach on leadership, the study evaluated how a change of a pastor's leadership in EunHyun church affected members' behavioral change.  To test the research question, the study identified and assessed the previous and current pastors' leadership style.  Subsequently, members were administered a survey in which three main variables were explored.  The current pastor had a more relationship-focusing leadership than the previous pastor. The intervention hypothesized that combining and applying the theories of hope and purpose pedagogically and through mentoring models could resolve the undifferentiated angst in the sample group.  This study concluded that a sense of hope and purpose is an effective antidote to the anger and aimlessness experienced by the members of the cohort. The author looks historically at the United Methodist Church's journey in starting new churches to reach African Americans and the strategies implemented during each era.  She discusses the need for a theology of church planting and explains how Wesleyan, Trinitarian, and Incarnational Theology can inform church planting.  She presents insights from the Lifeway African American Church planting research project which surveyed 290 African American planters. The goal of this thesis project was to explore the impact of the personal discipline of physical activity as a necessity in being a good steward of the body while being faithful to fulfill one's pastoral call. The problem is that clergy, in a sedentary occupation, can become physically unhealthy by engaging in meaningful ministry but neglecting to take care of themselves as they care for others. The scope of this work looks at the Apostle Paul's claim that there is value in being both physically and spiritually healthy. This work listens in on written conversations between professional and spiritually healthy. This work listens in on the written conversations between professional authorities as they consider how physical fitness benefits the spiritual life of clergy. This thesis-project was tested by a three month project where clergy engaged in physical exercise three days a week for thirty minutes and reflected on the impact on their spiritual lives.
