The first chapter makes a case that a womanist hermeneutic can be used by preachers who are not black women. It is argued that effective preachers need tools that give them access to intersections of race, class, and gender for the sake of the preaching life. Preachers will be challenged to discern a theology of preaching to guide the use of any hermeneutic. The second chapter introduces preachers to womanist theology. The chapter begins with the origins of womanist theology in black and feminist theologies. A review of first, second, and third wave womanist contributions is highlighted. Finally, preachers will explore analysis of how non-black women are using methodologies of race, gender, and class. The third chapter moves us toward a womanist hermeneutic for preaching. A variety of styles of womanist interpretive criteria are presented. Womanist strategies of reading and interrogating biblical texts are presented and each strategy is illustrated with a biblical text. The fourth chapter and the appendices share the testing method and results of the project. Assessment data is presented along with workshop participants' feedback and reflections. The gathered evidence affirms that all preachers can use a womanist hermeneutic."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130093880344576,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:26:07.876Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:58:36Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:03:12Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b4030af5-57ce-4752-af3d-4a94a7b4fa91","accessControl_ssim":["46c4534a-2fe4-4119-ba50-7dcac59818cf"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["How can the tradition of black gospel music continue to provide meaning and hope in the African American community?"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:58:34Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:19:48Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["56f816be-c85c-4b4d-804b-9026fbd324a1"],"hasLease_ssim":["3f58fe06-3b64-4792-bb89-13ac251dd9dd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Alvin McLean"],"year_tesim":["2014"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Sheila Robinson"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Music and religion","Gospel music","African Americans--Religion"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of the dissertation seeks answers to the question, How Can the Tradition of Black Gospel Music Continue to Provide Meaning and Hope to the African American Community? People from around the world with different customs, values, and beliefs are now living in close proximity to each other. To effectively engage in ministry in such a multicultural context will require leaders to intentionally develop competencies for their intercultural journey. This research project examined how ten three-hour sessions of training delivered over a 16-week period impacted the intercultural competency of eighteen Christian leaders from diverse cultural backgrounds. Three conceptual models that were foundational in designing this training: Bennett's 'Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity' (Bennett 1998), Deardorff's 'Process Model of Intercultural Competence' (Deardorff 2006), and Berry's 'Model of Acculturation' (Berry 2005). Both the IDI assessment and participant feedback suggested a significant development of intercultural competency of the members of the study group, indicating that a training intervention such as this could increase a leader's motivation, cultural self-awareness, knowledge and skills enabling them to navigate the complexities of intercultural ministry. The findings also suggest the most effective components of the training and how they might be transferable to other intercultural training programs."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Tyndale University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["602e7e7c-0b8b-4e09-af87-84c66ff49c48"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133792013910016,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:24:54.691Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":13089,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
