Lay and clergy leaders in congregations must find ways to share key pieces of not only denominational identity, but also fundamentals of the faith. As well, we must embrace ways of sharing our individual and collective spiritual narratives with newcomers so that they can both connect with our larger spiritual narrative and tell their own. This paper describes the efforts of one congregation's attempt to work with key lay leaders to help them identify pieces of their Christian and denominational identity, to train them in telling their own spiritual narratives to each other, to help them experiment in interacting with and welcoming newcomers (offering those newcomers threads of identity and narrative), and to see what connections, if any, happen between the leaders and the newcomers and in the larger congregation. This thesis tests the proposition that lay leaders will feel more comfortable,competent, and authoritative in welcoming and integrating newcomers into a congregation if they are grounded in core components of denominational identity, can articulate their own faith narrative, and have engaged in Action-Reflection experiments/exercises with newcomers within the context of a formational small group. The data that were collected and analyzed revealed their needs in this church. Noteworthy findings revealed the adult women enjoyed attending and serving the church, women's retreats, learning about women's black history, financial help, and physical conditioning. Some respondents were not sure if they enjoyed attending mid-week services, Sunday school, women's conferences, fellowships, workshops for married couples or adopting a women's shelter. Through action research and narrative inquiry, critical events in the workplace journeys of individuals are heard, recorded, and evaluated in test groups. Results show that as the storytellers gained new insight through recalling and reflecting on workplace episodes, test groups found their stories effective in stimulating meaningful dialog on work. From this project, a narrative pathway paradigm has emerged to identify, record and disseminate workplace testimonies as a small group curriculum. The goals of the project were evaluated by experts using an assessment tool. The evaluation results demonstrate significant agreement by the evaluators that the workbook accomplished the resource goals. The most prominent finding indicates strong agreement that the resource could help caregivers learn the cause and effect relationship between beliefs, thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. A training session educated the pastors about the beliefs of college students and how to minister to them. The pastors were given evangelism experience on the UNLV campus. An evaluation meeting was conducted about their findings. Participants came to understand the intended path for Christ followers to be an active apprenticeship to Jesus. A qualitative methodology using observation, narratives, face-to-face interviews, and a survey was employed. The findings suggest systemic and organizational issues concerning policies and procedures which include a neglect and lack of positive rewards, reduced staffing and high turnover rates, differing approaches to care planning, constant policy changes, lost leadership, and staff refusal to float. As a case study, the author uses qualitative research practices, describing the morphing process of this church from a church with a missions program to a multiethnic church. Based on the research, the author proposes a three-concentric-circle of missions to conceptualize the diaspora mission for the church. It consisted of six weekly sessions using readings from the book Healing for damaged emotions by David A. Seamands and discussion questions to stimulate group interaction. Group assessments consisting of pre- and post-test questionnaires were utilized to determine the effectiveness of small group ministry with this group of at-risk men.
