Advancements in communication and transportation have enabled people to live more dispersed from one another. This lack of proximity has created a commuter culture. This dissertation looks at the concept of community both biblically and theologically. The digital age has produced an abundance of technological communication tools. This work examines their importance in developing and in hindering community. The concept of 'missionality' as a key to forming community with traditional attractional churches is also presented. This project focuses on one particular United Methodist congregation and explores the capacity of silence to be spiritually transformative. The congregation was invited to participate in various modes of spiritual silence, including worship silence and centering prayer. The response of the congregation was assessed using focus groups. Using the equipping program model, the project included the development of a workshop consisting of six sessions which addressed the following topics: understanding biblical strategic planning, the need for leaders to strategically plan a process to make disciples, discovering strategic planning, strategic planning, strategic planning as a team and strategy vision. In preparation, the project director researched the field of strategy planning, received tutoring in curriculum design, and organized the ministry leaders of the church to participate. Workshop participants demonstrated an increased understanding of strategy planning skills. However, in the case of those living with the HIV/AIDS virus, the AA church has failed to live up to its creed and conviction. A 12-week Bible study curriculum utilizing cognitive dissonance was implemented to determine its effect on AA Christians toward those living with HIV/AIDS.
