By studying the contemporary and historical literature on the subject, looking to the scriptures, and conducting interviews with seasoned preachers, the author reveals some of the common causes of this phenomenon. Using descriptive research methodology, twelve missions-active churches were selected for analysis, and case studies were written so that other churches could learn from their example. Pastors and missions leadership teams were primary factors motivating these churches. Missions champions involve others in communicating God's heart for all peoples. Missions education shapes the church culture through multigenerational learning experiences. Missions-active churches are prayerful, supportive and sending churches. The study design consisted of an independent assessment of observed leadership behaviors before and after implementation of the training program. Ten lay leaders from Mebane Presbyterian Church in Mebane, North Carolina were evaluated by peers and followers using the Mind Garden online multifactor leadership questionnaire (MLQ 5X). The study participants underwent an intervention using biblical materials and action steps from Bass and Avolio's Leader's Notebook. The dissertation clarifies how to understand charisma and charismatic leadership in a way that helps founders to name a successor and maintain the integrity of their relationship with the followers. A review of leadership studies on charisma, charismatic leadership, and succession planning is the lens for analysis of the research on succession planning for Hillside Chapel and International Truth Center in Atlanta, Georgia. A group of six assessors were asked to evaluate the manual using the Likert Scale. Their responses determined the outcome of the project's eight goals. The results indicated that the manual was clear to understand and biblically accurate. It did, however, fail to meet the goals of effectively communicating the process of establishing missional worship experiences.
