Their town was founded to be a hub on the Underground Railroad. While many citizens of Geneseo today know that, they do not know that the founding of the town was part of an organized national strategy put forth by seminarians at Harvard and activists from western New York. This project will serve as a permanent resource in the Geneseo, Illinois Historical Museum. For the first time visitors will be able to discover in a comprehensive way the connections that have been made between the founders of Geneseo and the larger abolitionist movement of 19th-century America. This project chronicles the journeys of the Geneseo founding families, particularly the Allan brothers William and James. In many faith communities, these types of clerics have been preferred because of their resemblance to everyday people. The purpose of this project is to reframe or present differently definitions of what bivocational clergy and ministries look like through analysis of denominational and local church statistical data, archival documents, and participant interviews. Through this study the author challenged they current common definitions of what it means and looks like to be bivocational; suggesting that these definitions complicate the possibility of developing sustained, healthy, whole and holistic ministries because they ultimately cheapen the value of ministry. He focused on how to create reconciliation and a healthier community of believers among them biblically and relevantly: James 2:1, 'My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don't show favoritism' and the brotherhood-and-sisterhood movement from Koinonia movement. The author tried to engage these two insights with Jesus' discipleship, and then explained how the congregation can equitably put them in the congregation's relationship: the brotherhood-and -sisterhood movement and Jesus' disciple-making. This project focuses on how this tradition adversely affects the single, heterosexual Protestant Black woman's understanding of herself as a sexual being. Using the qualitative research method of phenomenology, this research explores how Black women's experiences and other sources for theological ethics can inform their desire to reconcile sexual and spiritual goodness. The scriptural pattern for this process is seen in the metaphor of God's breath, which repeatedly 'inspires' creation with new life. In order to explore this phenomenon, the author built an arts ministry within a local church with three branches: an art gallery with 3-5 exhibitions per year, a program of arts education with 3-5 offerings per year, and a regular practice of including the arts in worship in a variety of settings. The relationship between smaller membership churches and the presbytery is of particular concern. The author used surveys and multiple intervention strategies with smaller membership congregations within the Presbytery of Geneva, New York. Her conclusions include that transformational leadership that promotes healthy, vital, and tranformed communities of faith is paramount. Some are involved in music department ensembles which require their participation, several are over-involved in leadership activities, and others have rigorous majors. These student leaders need at least two formational realities: a spiritual formation model that does not add another layer of activity to their already hectic lives, and an intentional formational relationship with a pastoral educator-mentor who can help them engage in meaningful practices of Christian spiritual formation and deepen their skills in worship leadership. Distinctive pilot groups allowed the author to research, investigate, and delineate ideas and models for intentional formation mentoring.
