To better understand attitudes about cohabitation, selected young adults were invited into a dialogue. Storytelling, brief counseling, biblical topics, and social interaction were coordinated to encourage group participation and self-learning. At the conclusion of the study, cohabitating couples revealed their decisions to marry or not to marry. Consumers in a technological culture default to a 'device paradigm' that shapes their worldview and drives them to commoditize focal realities and sacred things. People expect to enjoy thick spiritual experiences without participating in the processes that create and cultivate such experiences. The author researched how study of the missional ecosystem helped to move a congregation beyond a limited benevolence outreach to an effective ministry with special focus on ministry to the adolescent. This missional conversation is framed within the larger missio-ecclesiological theology. God's mission to the world can only be understood through the incarnate Word of God. Incarnation is presented as the model for fulfilling God's purpose in the world. Using sermons, devotional manuals, journals, memoirs, letters and other primary source material, the author rediscovers and reconstructs the spiritual theology and spiritual practices of nineteenth-century Unitarians and Transcendentalists. He creatively re-appropriates and re-packages these practices for use by contemporary Unitarian Universalists, including teaching handouts and syllabi for congregational and graduate school classes.
