The author formed a group and practiced a 'mindfulness spirituality practice model' as a spiritual discipline. It was a model for healing and caring for depressed Christians. The author selected six participants who were struggling with depression, and this small group met for eight weeks. The participants showed positive changes with respect to their depressed feelings and anxiety. The report explores three particular dynamics associated with heathy transitions for first-call ministers: peer learning, mentoring, and congregational support. This Pentecostal church is primarily composed of immigrants mostly from Africa and the Caribbean Islands. After struggling to establish a small group ministry, the congregation and leaddership were consulted through conversations, interviews and surveys resulting in a more flexible, focused, and situation-sensitive model. The purpose of this small group ministry is to build a community of disciples nurtured by Bible study and prayer, connected with the church through their leaders, who minister to the needs of those within and beyond the group. A variety of methods (combining both qualitative and quantitative) with an emphasis on the ethnographic methodology eliciting emic views have been used to gather descriptive data. In addition, historical archival research was conducted to examine the Chinese and Christianity and the Chinese diaspora in general. Emerging cultural themes enabled the analysis of opportunities and threats to reach the Chinese diaspora in Africa. The author facilitated three six-week support groups in three different congregations, working with family members -- whether child, parent, spouse, or sibling -- who love someone with mental illness. The outcome of the group that went the entire six weeks supported the literature that peer-run support groups are an effective means of intervention. It also provided an avenue for people to discuss their own death and to begin the process of pre-planning their funerals as a way to celebrate their life story and take some of the burden off their family. Using traditional research methods and observations made from his ministry experience, the author created a workshop for members of his congregation.
