With so many insisting that one cannot be gay and Christian, we construct a dividing line between what happens on a Saturday night and who we are in a Church on Sunday morning. I do not believe that this is an issue with which only LGBTQ persons struggle. I believe that most Christians struggle to reconcile the messiness of everyday life and their self-representation in Church. Much of this compartmentalization centers around the tension between what is sacred and what is secular. The key concept was a good beginning - how a new pastor might make an intentionally good beginning.  In order to define a good beginning the Holy Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions were examined, and LCMS district presidents were interviewed. They gave their definitions and suggested names of pastors who had started well.  Those pastors were then interviewed to add their insights. The existing resources were also examined. Some people who receive healing for emotional hurts through inner healing prayer relapse into past wounding behaviors. The effort relapse is first on the one who relapses. The second effect is on the healing community, especially the people in healing ministry who pray with them. The method for study was based on group dynamics process, psychological principles of active listening, and group session analysis. Emphasis is given to imagination, subversion of stereo-type, immigration and the discipline of hospitality. 50 Evangelical Christians from Otter Creek Church participated in a 4 month dialog on the responsibility of Christians toward Muslims in the US. This resulted in moderate to significant changes in perceptions, attitudes and stereo-types. Working with terminal patients, the author created exploration sheets to go with each spiritual practice to guide the conversations between the patient and the chaplain in a hospice and palliative care setting. It presents research conducted by examining the staff listings found on congregational websites, analyzing denominational statistics on non-clergy compensation, and surveying lay church staff and pastors. It finds that an estimated 40,000 lay staff work in United Methodist congregations.
