Persuasive preaching's goal is to convince the listener to align his or her attitude and action with the message of the sermon. This study seeks to discover a paradigm for this. The praxis director chose twelve individuals to participate in surveys and interviews. The director preached a series of four sermons focused on one general theme. After the sermon series, the director conducted a ministry program directly connected to the theme of the sermon series. As a whole, the participants experienced greater levels of perceived spiritual growth while participating in the practice of the spiritual disciplines. With the population decline and aging of the Upper Midwest, many congregations are no longer able to support full-time ordained pastors. Congregations of several denominations have pressed into service licensed local pastors, and other lay persons to preach. United Methodist preachers serving in rural parishes in Iowa were coached in various aspects of preaching. Together with a new emphasis on elders as spiritual leaders, this change fosters a renewed interest in the preparation and care of congregational leaders. This project proposes a new vision for elder selection and training, and retention that emphasizes the spiritual and perennial nature of the call to ordination as Ruling Elder. It incorporates spiritual discernment and sabbath-keeping as essential elements, including a redefining of the 'college of elders'. The author considered biblical, theological, and missional issues that arise from explicitly inviting all in a congregation to receive communion without regard to Christian baptism or belief. After surveying several studies of open communion, the author questioned clergy in the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego about their support for or opposition to it. I asked the participants to take a sixty day challenge by keeping a regular Sabbath rest each week. The Sabbath rest can help prevent burnout and lead to a stronger faith in God. I used the case study methodology by conducting research through an open-ended questionnaire and a survey. The retreat model was reviewed and evaluated by a panel of experts in the fields of spiritual formation and Christian leadership.
